I was recently in New Haven, Connecticut for a conference at Yale University. Much to my surprise and delight, I found the downtown New Haven area surrounding the Yale campus to be overflowing with locally-owned restaurants of every variety. With over 300 restaurants right in the downtown area, I was in foodie heaven, trying as many eateries as I could fit into my short stay. I left wanting more and I can only hope that I’ll have the occasion to visit Yale again soon. You won’t have any trouble finding a good spot to eat near Yale, but here are some of my favorites that you’ll want to include on your visit!
This upscale Italian dining restaurant offers every classic Italian dish your heart desires, cooked to perfection, and served up with a flare for the aesthetics.
CLAIRE’S CORNER COPIA
This vegetarian- and vegan-friendly cafe offers just what their name suggests, a cornucopia of delicious options. Try one of their fresh smoothies and a slice of cake topped with their freshly-made from natural dyes frosting.
JOJO’S COFFEE TEA
This quiet coffeehouse is frequented by Yale students working and studying, and makes a great spot to enjoy a book with a delicious hand crafted lattes or one of their many tea offerings.
Known for their mojitos, the moment you step into this restaurant you will feel itsrich, vibrant energy, starting with their colorfully-tiled walls and following up with a full menu. This spot makes the Zagat recommendation list every year, it’s worth a try!
A few minutes walk from the downtown area, this pizzeria has been a staple of the downtown New Haven eateries since it started whipping up buzz-worthy pizzas in 1925. There’s usually a line out the door of people waiting to get some of Pepe’s famous pizza, and you’ll understand why as the moment you step in the door you’re hit with the aroma of fresh ingredients being combined into a savory pizza delight. Pizza is served family style, so order a few and share around the table. I say go with the original tomato and mozzarella, a tried and true favorite!
Blending in perfect harmony the irresistible flavors of France and Italy, this restaurant serves up dishes like Uovo al Forno, Moules Frites, Coq au Vin, and Pesce di Giorno!
WILLOUGHBY’S COFFEE AND TEA
This coffeehouse, popular among Yale students on weekend afternoons, offers a simple menu of coffees and sweets, made with care. I quite enjoyed their vanilla latte!
This pizzeria has been a part of the Yale community for decades, proudly displaying photos of Yale student athletes and teams all over its walls. The Greek diner-style menu offers up just about everything you could want, and the crispy-crusted pizza topped with plenty of cheese is a must-try!
